1.8 Billion People Drink Water from Contaminated Sources- UNICEF

The Officer-In-Charge, Unicef Enugu field office, Amose Kudzala has advocated concerted effort to improve the collection and treatment of waste water.

Kudzala stated this at a zonal media breakfast meeting on the commemoration of this year’s world water day celebration in Enugu.

Amose Kudzala stated that collaboration by stakeholders will contribute inimproving water quality by increasing the proportion of treated water.

According to him, about 80 % of waste water flows back into the ecosystem without being reused adding that about 1 point 8 billion people drink water from contaminated sources just as 603 million people lack access to improved drinking water.

In a presentation entitled “Ethical Reporting On Children” UNICEF Communication Officer, Enugu field office, Ijeoma Onuoha-Ogwe acknowledged the peculiar challenges often faced by journalists while reporting issues affecting children but advised media professionals to always uphold best ethical principles.

The Managing Director, Enugu Rural Water Sanitation Agency, ENRUWASA Frank Omeje, assured of the state government to ensure safe potable water to the people of the state.

This year’s World Water Day theme is Why Waste Water, but celebrated in Nigeria as Water, Waste Water.
