The speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Edward Ubosi says, boxing talent hunt competition initiated by him will not only revive boxing in the state but will help in engaging the youth meaningfully.
Ubosi who stated this while briefing journalists on the importance of the competition said it is one of his pet projects that aims at catching young persons interested in the sport young.
The Speaker explained that the first and second phase of the talent hunt has been completed with the third phase expected to commence between the last week and first week of October.
Ubosi further stressed the need for other sporting activities to be recognised as they would bring out massive youth engagement and reduce youth restiveness.
The technical committee chairman of the project and the house committee chairman on youths and sports, Nelson Uduji noted that over 227 secondary schools had been visited in the first and second stages of the talent hunt.
Meanwhile, association of local government of Nigeria chairman and Enugu east caretaker committee chairman, prince Cornelius Nnaji commended the speaker for the initiative and assured of support as ALGON will do all it can to ensure sustainability of the project.
In the same vain representative of the commissioner for local government matters, Emmanuel Mbamalu, on behalf of youths of the state, Mark Onuoha and others commended the speaker’s initiative while calling on well meaning individuals in the state, organisations and groups to encourage and support other forms of sport as it would bring about employment.
Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalist, Enugu council, Rex Arum noted that boxing had nose-dived over the years and a great development for the speaker to have delved into the sport.
Earlier Ikechukwu Okoronkwo, former world boxing champion who is also the technical sub-committee chairman of the boxing talent hunt competition assured that all participants go through thorough health screening and fitness before participation.
The trophy for the talent hunt was presented to the speaker shortly before he inspected the equipment purchased for the final stage of the competition.
