A cleric, Rev. Fr. Michael Ogbu, on Tuesday, tasked journalists on service to humanity through dedication in standing for the truth and justice always.
Ogbu gave the charge on at a homily he gave at a service of songs organized by the Correspondent Chapel Enugu for late Uwakwe Abugu, the demised Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Abugu, who was appointed Chief Press Secretary by Ugwuanyi in 2015, died on June 4 in a hospital in India, after a protracted illness.
Before the appointment, he was the South-East Bureau Chief of New Telegraph Newspaper.
The cleric noted that God would not forget any person or group that joins in bringing succour and relive to people by serving the people with truth and justice.
“We must live our lives in a way to promote truth and justice, which by extension is serving humanity.
“God the author of humanity always rewards those that diligently and truthfully add value to humanity,’’ he said.
He also urged journalists to humble themselves; adding that God exalted the humble but resisted the proud.
Ogbu, who is a vicar in Holy Ghost Catholic Cathedral, Enugu, described Abugu as a person loved by all by the crowd that defied the rain to attend the service.
Speaking, the National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mr Abdulwaheed Odusile, who was represented by the former Vice President National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Mr Chieso Aninwagwa, described Abugu as a peace-loving man.
Odusile noted that NUJ would not forget the sacrifice Abugu made in grooming young journalists in Enugu.
“Abugu was a man of distinction and dedication to his duty, who held the journalism his chosen profession to a high esteem,’’ he said.
The Chairman of the Chapel, Mr Petrus Obi, thanked all for defying the rain to attend the service of songs and pay respect to “our own’’.
NAN reports that the services was attended by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Mr Ogbuagu Anikwe, various special assistant to Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on media matters and other government functionaries.
Others are heads of media houses, bureau chiefs of various newspapers, correspondents, newspaper vendors etc.
Abugu will be finally buried on Friday, June 29, at his hometown in Nsukka.
