Tension has enveloped the Nnewi and Adazi following the sudden disappearance of the emeritus Archbishop of the Niger Province and Bishop of Nnewi, Most Rev. Prof. Godwin Okpala who hails from Adazi Ani, Anaocha Local Government Area Anambra State.
The disappearance of the Archbishop who is heading towards 75 years has continued to generate tension and anxiety among the Anglican faithful in Nnewi, and his home town Adazi Ani in particular and the state in general.
Most Rev. Prof. Okpala, together with his driver, were said to have gone missing since Friday morning when they were going to the burial of another Bishop’s relation in Umuchu Aguata Local Government Area of the State, but they failed to arrive at their destination.
Vanguard gathered that despite efforts by the church to establish contact with them, no communication has been received and the whereabouts of Archbishop and his driver, including his vehicle have remained unknown.
A prayer report issued by the Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Obi, on Saturday, called for intercessory prayers for the Archbishop’s safe return.
The report read “Good evening Fathers In God. With a heavy heart, we wish to inform us that our dear Father, Most Rev Prof. Godwin Okpala (Rtd Archbishop of the Niger province and Bishop of Nnewi) has been missing since yesterday (Friday) morning.
“He travelled with his driver to Umuchu but never got to his destination and he is yet to return, neither have we heard from them. He together with his driver and his car are nowhere to be found.
“We earnestly plead for your fervent prayers for their safety and swift return. The relevant authorities have been contacted and we are hopeful and trusting in God’s divine intervention for a positive resolution”
Bishop Obi, who confirmed the development when contacted on Saturday, however, referred journalists to the Church’s Communication Board, for further details.
However, when also contacted, a member of the board, who pleaded anonymity, simply said, “Yes, it is true, the bishop and his driver went on a trip to somewhere in Umuchu community since Friday morning and till now, their whereabouts have remained unknown.
“We have contacted the relevant authorities and the police are aware of the development, we hope for the safe return of the bishop and his driver.”
