A former Inspector General of Police, Ogbonna Onovo has called for concerted effort in tackling current security challenges in the country.
He made the call on Monday at a community policing sensitisation workshop for stakeholders held at the senior officer’s mess, Enugu.
Community policing, also known as community-oriented policing is a strategy of policing that focuses on developing relationships with community members.
Delivering a lecture at the event, the former police IG Ogbonna Onovo identified community-policing as the best policing strategy that could help tackle the peculiar security challenges in communities.
Onovo, who is a security consultant to Enugu state government stress the need for collaboration between critical stakeholders in the security sector to ensure the realisation of the full objectives of the community-policing model.
Enugu state commissioner of police, Ahmad Abdurrahman described the workshop as apt as it will equip police officers of emerging security challenges in the society.
He said the command will continue to work with various stakeholders in the community-policing model to ensure a safer society.
He disclosed that over 200 newly recruited community police are currently being trained at the Oji River police academy to assist the police in securing their communities.
In a keynote address, the chairman, Enugu state community policing committee, deputy commissioner of police, Fred Ekokotu noted that community policing was adopted as a community-based internal security management strategy to compliment the Nigeria police so as to allow the communities some levels of participation in their own policing.
In a remark, the traditional ruler of Ibagwa-Nike, Emmanuel Ugwu who is the deputy chairman, Enugu state community policing committee assured that traditional rulers in the state will work with other stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of the community policing initiative.
The event was attended by representatives of the Hausa and Fulani community, Christian Association of Nigeria and traditional rulers among others.
