The Nigeria Correctional Officers’ Wives Association (NICOWA) has empowered 10 women in Enugu on assorted type of soap-making technique on commercial basis in order for them to financially support their husbands and families.
The Chairperson of NICOWA Enugu Chapter, Mrs Franca Emelue, said this during NICOWA End of the Year Party/Send-Off held in Enugu on Sunday.
Emelue said that the association had an elaborate ambition to expand its skill acquisition programmes but was highly restricted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to her, however, we are mobilizing to see that all officers’ wives key-in into NICOWA commercially viable skill acquisition and training to boost their financial well-being in 2021.
“For 2021, we have a lot of initiatives; one is that we have plan of implementing Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project for inmates in the custodial centres to protect them better from COVID-19.
“However, this initiative cannot be actualise without proper funding; hence, we solicit financial support of all especially our husbands and well-wishers.
“We have already made move for skill acquisition for all female inmates in the state but we were stopped due to the restrictions on visitation into the custodial centres due to COVID-19 but we hope it will be achieved by 2021.
“We have it in mind to have a bread making centre to serve the entire costodial centres in the state both for inmates and staff,’’ she said.
Emelue appreciated the National President of NICOWA, Mrs Ahmed Jarfaru, for her exemplary leadership qualities as well as her support to the Enugu chapter to achieve the aforementioned initiatives.
Earlier, the Controller of Corrections in Enugu State, Mr Joseph Emelue, lauded NICOWA for their effective support to the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) Enugu State Command in achieving total reformation of inmates.
“NICOWA has continued to be a trusted pillar of support to enable NCoS and this Command in particular achieve its mandate. We are indeed appreciative of our wives,’’ the controller said.
