The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Mohammed Danmallam, has tasked Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and formation commanders under his command on improvement of the working environment of their stations.
Danmallam gave the charge while inaugurating a modern interrogation room, visitors’ waiting room as well as sets of convenience for cell inmates at Ogui Police Station in Enugu metropolis on Wednesday.
He noted that there was a need for police officers and men to develop new and better idea of policing meant to improve their work generally.
“It is something to be appreciated that an officer is taking an initiative to better his station as well as improve on facilities in it.
“We must always prove to the public that we serve that we ourselves, the police, we can better our work and environment where the work is been carried out,’’ he said.
The commissioner urged other DPOs and formation commanders to emulate what the DPO in Ogui Station had done.
“I wish all DPOs, formation commanders and unit heads will copy this, which will lead to a transformation in the entire Nigeria Police Force,’’ he said.
Earlier, the DPO of Ogui Police Station, Enugu, SP Arthur Amobi, said that he was following the foot-step of the commissioner and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, who are personally committed to uplift the status of Nigerian Police in all ramifications.
“I was moved to follow the footsteps of very senior police officers as well as ensuring that cell inmate have at least a minimal comfort in the station,’’ Amobi said.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said that the new modern sets of convenience at the station had modern bathing and toilet facilities for cell inmates within the few hours they might stay in the station before they are charged to court.
“While the new and equip interrogation room will provide a spacious and conducive environment for interrogation, where the suspect or suspects will be relaxed,’’ he said.
