…as Customs fingers officials of terminal operators, bonded terminals, others
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said it has impounded hard drugs and unwholesome pharmaceutical products imported from India and Canada.
Disclosing this in Lagos on Friday, the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, said that drugs are worth N4.1 billion.
The Customs boss expressed concern about the worrisome importation of these illicit drugs, and he noted that such drugs, if left unchecked, may fuel criminality and insecurity in the country.
He also explained that there is a possibility of convenience between officials of some terminals, bonded terminals, and those of the service.
He disclosed that investigations are ongoing and those caught will be made to face the law.
Giving a breakdown of the seized items, made by officers and men of the Tin-can Island Command, the Customs boss said, “two containers of unwholesome importations comprising of 1×40 foot container of regulated unregistered pharmaceutical products and another 1×40-foot container of illicit psychotropic substances were seized by Tin-Can Command of the Service.
“Details of the seized containers are as follows: Three plastic drums concealing several packets of Cannabis Indica; 46 bags containing 2,144 packets of Cannabis Indica, all weighing 1,072 kilogrammes, kg, seized from 1×40-foot Container No. GAOU 669921/5 imported from Canada. The approximate street value of the illicit substances is N3.2 billion.
“877 cartons of Barcadin cough syrup with codeine, 200 bottles of 100ml per carton, and 82 cartons of Really Extra Diclofenac Sodium 50 milligrams, mg tablets, 600 packs per carton imported from India was also seized. The approximate street value of the cough syrup is N964.3 million.
“This operation highlights a troubling trend and the evolving tactics of criminality and insecurity in our country. However, it is also evident of the NCS’s resolve to remain vigilant and showcase our ability to intercept and disrupt the activities of those who seek to harm our nation.
