The Delta State Directorate of Transport has observed the re-emergence of the use of motorcycle (Okada) as means of transportation in Asaba, Warri, Effurun and Abraka.
This is in spite of the fact that the State Government ban on the use of motorcycle as a means of transportation in these areas is still in force.
For the avoidance of doubt, the State Government had on the 1st of November 2012, placed a ban on the use of motorcycle for private or commercial purposes in the above-mentioned towns to check the incidence of crimes, such as armed robbery, snatching of bags, and trailing of bank customers by hoodlums.
The Directorate has also observed that some of the unlawful riders are Police Officers and other uniformed law enforcement personnel of government who are supposed to ensure that government directives are enforced.
To check the security risk associated with the use of motorcycle or Okada on our roads, residents in Asaba had in a publication, in the Pointer Newspaper of 27th September, 2017, appealed to Government and security agencies to stop the use of motorcycle as means of transportation, especially in the areas where its use has been banned.
In response to the demand of residents in Asaba, the Directorate will soon roll out a taskforce on enforcement as well as commence the confiscation of motorcycles found on restricted areas in Asaba and other areas of the State where the use of motorcycles has been banned.
Accordingly, the Commissioner of Police Delta State is hereby called upon to advice Police Officers and other uniformed law enforcement officers to desist from the use of motorcycles in Asaba, Abraka, Effurun and Warri in line with the ban placed by the Delta State Government.
By this announcement, the Delta State Directorate of Transport has requested the State Police Area Commander in Delta North, Delta South including the Divisional Police Officers in these areas to enforce the ban on the use of motorcycles.
It is stressed that defaulters will be prosecuted to serve as a deterrent.
