The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has emerged overall first position in the 2017 Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) Safety ranking.
NEMSA is an agency of government responsible for ensuring safety of lives and property in the Nigerian electricity supply industry.
The Head, Communications of EEDC, Mr Emeka Ezeh, said in a statement issued on Thursday that the first position came after a remarkable leap from its fifth position in the 2016 NEMSA Safety ranking.
Ezeh said that the ranking was released by NEMSA in its Disco and Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Ranking Trend for the year 2017 at the just-concluded Monthly Power Sector Meeting held at Mararaba Akunza, Nasarawa State on Jan. 8.
“It is worthy of note that in the year under review, EEDC consistently maintained first position in eight out of 12 months ranking.
“This underscores the passion and conscious effort put in by the management of the company in ensuring that safety rules are strictly adhered to, and safe environment are consistently maintained,’’ he said.
The EEDC spokesman said that the criteria used for the ranking ranges from fatalities (that is the number of deaths within the network), major injuries as well as network resolved safety issues.
Ezeh noted that the Acting Managing Director of EEDC, Mr. Paul Okeke, had attributed this feat to the commitment and conscious effort made by the Management of EEDC in ensuring strict adherence to safety rules and regulations.
He said that Okeke also attributed the feat to the consistent Public Safety Awareness Campaign via interactive radio shows across the South-East states as well as town hall meetings held in various council areas in the South-East to sensitise the public on the need to be safety conscious.
In his own reaction, the Head, Health, Safety and Environment in EEDC, Mr Francis Iwu, attributed the achievement to the seriousness the organisation had been giving to safety among staff and customers of the company.
“We have also continuously invested in qualified safety personnel training and equipment as well as printing of safety messages in leaflets and other publications,’’ Iwu noted.
