The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC today Thursday May 4,2017 arraigned one Christian Amaechi Ajokwu before Justice Lewis Alagoa of the Federal High Court, Owerri ,Imo State on a one count charge of obtaining the sum of N11,200,000.00 (Eleven Million, Two Hundred Thousand Naira Only) under false pretences and impersonation .
Ajokwu pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him prompting his counsel, Kingsley Oparaku to apply for his bail stating that the offence for which his client was charged was bailable.
Reacting to the development, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Ajobiewe opposed the application for bail on the grounds that it was made orally. He said the defence counsel should formally apply for bail to enable him reply likewise.
Justice Alagoa concurred with prosecution and ruled that the defence counsel should formally apply for bail on behalf of his client.
Ajokwu was alleged to have around January 2016, presented himself as a member and custodian of the families of land owners at Public building Layout, Owerri to an unsuspecting prominent member of the society in the state capital.
He had told his victim that members of the families had appointed him to negotiate and transact the customary land settlement on their behalf an offence which the Commission said, was contrary to 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act,2006 and punishable under Section1 (3) of the same Act.
