The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Oji River branch has presented an award of ‘Democracy Man of the Year 2022’ to the State Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), The Hon Barr Ugochukwu H Agballah for his contributions to democracy.

The NBA declared that Agballah has provided a credible political platform of choice to the people of Enugu State, especially with his overwhelming victory and emergence as APC Chairman, Enugu state.

The award was presented to him weekend, at the Justice Umezuluike Hall of the Enugu High court.

Recall that on October 16 2021, Agballah was elected the State Chairman of APC in a keenly contested election.

Since his assumption of office, the political space has been enlivened as he has clearly redefined APC in the state and repositioned it as an opposition party offering alternative choice which has deepened democracy in Enugu state.

The development has signalled an end to one party system and non-competitive politics which has characterized Enugu state politics since 2007.

It is pertinent to note that in 2003 and 2007 Ugochukwu H Agballah was popularly believed to have won both governorship elections which controversial results were all cancelled by the tribunals but upheld by the Appellate courts.

Since Agballah’s exit as a political leader in 2007, Enugu’s politics had become non-competitive and his election into office as APC Chairman has already heralded the return of competitive politics.

Apparently having followed his political trajectory, the Nigeria bar Oji River branch found him worthy of her award of deepening democracy in Enugu State.

This is going by the dictum that democracy cannot blossom where there is no competitiveness or alternative platforms.

It is the hope and aspiration of the people that Enugu shall rise again.
