Enugu Assembly summons Nnam, Onoh over allegations of land-grabbing, extortion

Pursuant to section 129 of 1999 constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, Enugu State House of Assembly has summoned Enugu State Commissioner of lands and Urban Development, Dr Victor Nnam for extorting members of public through land speculation.

Similarly, Chairman, Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority, Hon. Josef Umunnakwe Onoh who did not appear on the first meeting is also to appear for a discussion.

 

The Chief Town Planning Officers of Enugu North and Enugu south Local government Areas are also summoned to appear before the house for their failure to appear before Enugu House of Assembly special committee on extortion in Enugu urban areas and other connected matters as they were invited by the committee on its inaugural and second sitting on September 15 and 16 2021 respectively.

According to a statement by Mr. Christian Ede – Public Relations Officer,- Enugu State House of Assembly, the Committee gave the summoning order on Thursday, September 16, 2021, during the second sitting of the committee at the conference hall of Enugu State House of Assembly and reiterated that Enugu State House of Assembly will do everything within the confines of the law and in line with international best practice to make Enugu State investment friendly in accordance with policies and programmes of Enugu State ably led by His Excellency, the governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Dr. Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

The committee also assured the people of Enugu State that the House will protect them against any form of extortion by any Ministry, Department or Agency in Enugu State.

 

It should be recalled that the House set up the committee on September 2, 2021 to investigate activities of some Ministries, Departments and Agencies in Enugu State in connection with revenue collection in Enugu urban areas which has led to allegations of extortion and double collections of fees from members of the public.

 

The speaker told the committee to do a thorough job and report back to the House within two weeks.

 

Meanwhile, the committee has invited Enugu State Ministry of Transport, Enugu State Capital Territory Development Authority, Ministry of Commerce and industries for their interview during the committee’s inaugural sitting and Enugu North, East, and South Local Govt Areas and two town planning officers of Enugu South and North on the second sitting of the committee.

 

All invited officials are to appear before the committee on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 in the conference hall of the Enugu State House of Assembly by 11 am prompt.
