ENUGU: The Chairman, Enugu South Local Government Area, Hon. Sunday Ugwu has called on residents in the council area who are 18 years and above, who have not been registered to take advantage of the ongoing voter’s registration exercise to register.
Mr Ugwu who made the call while speaking with journalists at the Independent National Electoral Commission office, Amechi Awkunanaw stressed the need for registration and collection of PVC stating that it is one’s right to vote provided you have the card.
Mr Ugwu called on all the stakeholders to help disseminate the information and also mobilises people stating that it will help change the attitude of people and increase awareness.
Also, Mrs Ifeoma Ezeugwu, the Electoral Officer in Amaechi Awkwunanaw said that INEC is empowered to register prospective voters on a continuous basis to ensure that all those who are qualified to vote are registered.
She added that the exercise which started on the 27th April will last for three months and starts by 9 am to 3 pm Mondays and Fridays.
Mrs Ezeugwu stressed that the continuous voter registration will give an opportunity to those who have turned 18 years, those who did not register in the last registration or who registered before but whose names adventure did not appear on the voter’s register.
She further said that the CVR will have room for Intra and interstate registration area or polling unit transfer of voters stressing that the issue of transfers will be centralised at the state registration center.
She maintained that officers will be at the LG registration centres issuing permanent voters card to those who turn up for claims.
Speaking on eligibility to register in the continuous voter registration CVR Mrs Ezegwu said that one must be a citizen of Nigeria, must have attained the age 18 and above but could not register during the last registration exercise, must register under a L.G.A where he or she originates, resides or work to enable mobility on an election day.
