Ahead of the 2022 local government elections in Enugu state, a Civil Society Organisation, Yiaga Africa, has advocated support for youths contesting elections and ensuring they win.

Programme Manager, Governance and Development, Yiaga Africa, Ibrahim Faruk, made the call at the ‘run-to-win’ town hall meeting with young candidates and leadership of political parties, and the media in enugu on Saturday.

The clamour for young people to run for elective positions in government was amplified in the 2019 elections, following the proposed ‘not too young to run’ bill by some select young and concerned nigerians in 2016.

The bill, which was signed into law by president muhammadu buhari in 2018, specifically encouraged young people to run for public office.

Speaking in Enugu at the second edition of its ‘Run-To-Win’ town hall meeting, ibrahim faruk said that the signing of the nottooyoungtorun bill by president buhari in 2018 affirmed that young people are indeed not too young to run for elective office.

he stated that as much as yiaga africa encourages and provides support for young people to run and occupy elective offices it is more interested in young people who possess competence and capacity.

He revealed that the run to win campaign is aimed at bringing together young people who are running for office, to ensure that they get the support they need in order to not only run for office, but also win in the elections.

He urged political parties and other critical stakeholders including the media to support young people contesting elections.

Panelists including representatives of political parties, candidates in the forthcoming local government elections in the state urged level playing field while the media assured it will remain non-partisan but would equal opportunity for all parties to advance their individual programmes and manifestoes

The ‘run-to-win’ initiative is aimed at providing a platform for young candidates and party leadership to chart pathways of improving the chances of young people running for elective office while creating avenue for young candidates to share their plans with prospective voters.
