The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Mohammed Danmallam, has tasked police officers and men to imbibe professionalism in the daily discharge of their duties.

Danmallam gave the charge in Enugu while declaring open a month-long training programme for various cadres of personnel within Enugu State Police Command.

The training programme, which would last for three days for each batch of police personnel, is been organized by the Command in partnership with the Nigeria Policing Programme (NPP).

Danmallam, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Imaikop Okponkpong, noted that the training would further expose almost all the personnel in the command to best practices in policing as well as enhance their operational efficiency.

“The command is keying into the various NPP projects in order to gradually engineer its officers and men to police with dignity and human face.

“The training will also cover legal issues, rules of engagement and human relations of the police with the general public,’’ he said.

According to him, I am convinced that after attending this intensive training for three days for each personnel, there will be a remarkable difference in the attitude of our officers and men towards their work.

The commissioner, however, lauded the partnership between the NPP and the command; which had drew the people of the state closer to the police through the NPP’s Community Safety Programme (CSP) Initiative.

“This training is also a form of stepping down CSP programme on the aspect that concerns the police and will further cement the existing relationship between the command and residents for effective policing,’’ he said.

Earlier, the Deputy Team Lead of NPP Projects in Enugu State, Mr Idris Bawa, lauded the commissioner for supporting the NPP programmes and providing logistics for it to succeed.

Bawa noted that the police needed to work on its image so that the public would relate well and close with it.

“This training will help change negative tendencies and unprofessional conducts which some officers and men are engaged in,’’ he noted.

It would be recalled that the pilot states for the domestication of the community policing framework under NPP include: Borno, Enugu, Kano and Lagos States.

The Central Police Station in Enugu had been chosen as the pilot division for NPP projects in Enugu State.
