The Chairman of Enugu State Urban Renewal Committee, Arc Chris Offor, has appealed to residents of the state to support the government’s development programmes by desisting from indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the drainage system, to allow easy flow of water and avoid the incidence of flooding during the rains.

Arc. Offor also urged the residents to assist the government in cleaning up the clogged drainage system in their respective areas, stressing that Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s administration is poised to provide more massive infrastructure and address other basic needs of the people as well as protect their lives and property.

The Committee Chairman spoke at the University town of Nsukka during a facility tour of the area to review the ongoing development projects and the level of water flow during the rains.

Arc Offor commended Gov. Ugwuanyi for quality projects being executed in the state and his proactive response towards averting some unforeseen challenges being encountered on some of the facilities, especially during this rainy season. He maintained that “the present administration is geared towards safeguarding its infrastructure as well as protecting the lives and property of the citizens” in the overall interest of the state.

The Chairman assured the people of the state that all that need to be corrected will be done before the next rainy season and passionately appealed to them to continue to support and cooperate with the government’s efforts to provide more dividends of democracy by avoiding any action that could lead to blockage of the waterways in the state.

Responding, a cross section of residents applauded the governor for his commitment to good governance and well-being of the people, regretting that dumping waste along water channel was the cause of the upsurge of water in some parts of Nsukka.

A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Charles Ugwu said: “Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi while constructing these roads in his administration’s current urban renewal efforts, provided a reliable drainage system that can make these roads very durable, but the people have decided to block the drainage with refuse thereby causing water overflow during heavy downpour”. He enjoined the inhabitants to cooperate with the government to develop the state.

Also speaking, a legal practitioner, Barrister Victor Ozioko applauded the governor’s immediate response to the challenges, saying that the quick intervention has distinguished him as “a man endowed with fellow feelings”.
