The Enugu state government says it will no longer condone indiscriminate parking and illegal trading on the streets and major roads in Enugu metropolis.
The senior special assistant (SSA) to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on Transport, Honorable Peter Ajah stated this on Saturday during a sensitization exercise at holy-ghost and old park axis on the need for street traders to evacuate the area.
Hon Ajah who is also the chairman, Enugu State Enforcement Committee on Decongestion said activities of traders along major roads in the state is constituting traffic and thereby make movement unbearable for motorists and pedestrians.
Ajah advised persons trading on the streets to acquire shops inside the markets designated for business transactions adding that enforcement will soon commence.
“That you are a petty trader, or that we are hungry or poor is not a criteria to commit another offense. Blocking the pedestrian walkway is an offense on itself. blocking our rules, some offense on itself. That you are poor doesn’t give you the right to block that road. Your right ends where the other person’s right begins.” He said.
According to Ajah, the ban on street trading is “to make sure that there is sanity on our roads, is to make sure that there is a seamless movement of vehicles and pedestrians, is to ensure that people no longer suffocate on this road, because of traffic. It is for overriding public interest”.
Also speaking, the chief security officer, ministry of transport and commander, Enugu State Traffic Management Agency, ESTMA, Mathew Amor said personnel of the agency and members of the enforcement committee are ready to enforce the state government order on decongestion to the letter.
Amor said illegal activities of street traders do not only cause vehicular traffic but constitute environment pollution.
