The Enugu State Government has handed over 347 plots of land to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Nigeria chapter.

The plots of land situated at the Coal City Eastern Extension Alliance Estate, behind Premier Layout in Enugu city, were reportedly first acquired by ASUU UNN chapter in 2011 but had been dogged by controversies which previous administrations in the state were unable to resolve before now.

The General Manager, Enugu State Housing Development Corporation, ESHDA, Barr. Gerald Asogwa performed the handover of the title documents for the parcels of land during a meeting with the ASUU UNN delegation led by the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Daniel Nwachukwu, in his office in Enugu, Wednesday.

Barr Asogwa urged the university dons to commence the development of their buildings immediately, saying the contractors handling the provision of infrastructure and the access road to the estate had already mobilized to site and started working.

Speaking on behalf of the union, Prof. Nwachukwu commended the Enugu State government for the wonderful gesture shown to the union, stating that no time would be wasted in developing the lands, as their members had waited for too long to be granted possession of the lands.

According to him, the lands were released to them without additional charges, describing the handover as a welcome relief to the ASUU, UNN chapter.

Prof Nwachukwu further extolled Governor Mbah for his vision for the state, especially in the area of infrastructure, saying he had proven that he came prepared to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of the state.

“We have seen all the good works he is doing in Enugu State, both in housing, roads and other infrastructural developments. Within one year in office we have seen the transformational change he has brought to the good people of Enugu State. It shows he came to Enugu to work and everyone is seeing it. By the end of this tenure, you will find out that Enugu will be the Enugu of our dreams.

“Enugu is the headquarters of the South East. It is a home for us all, and when we retire, we will still be in Enugu because that is where we lived and worked. We want to thank the governor specially for making this possible for us. He never collected any money from us and we are assuring him that we will start development as soon as possible,” he stated.
