Enugu Govt Issues Cholera Outbreak Advisory

The Enugu state government through the state ministry of health has alert residents of the state to cholera outbreak affecting several states in Nigeria.

In an advisory signed by the commissioner for health, Dr Ikechukwu Obi, noted while there is no confirmed cases in Enugu state, it is crucial to stay informed and take preventive measures, which include; boiling or treatment drinking water to ensure its safety, wash hands frequently with soap and clean running water, as well as avoid consuming raw or undercooked food among others.

The Enugu State Government through the State Ministry of Health wishes to bring your attention to the ongoing cholera outbreak affecting several states in Nigeria.

While we have not yet confirmed any cases in our state, it is crucial to stay informed and take preventive measures to protect ourselves and our community.

*What is Cholera?* Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It spreads through contaminated food and water, especially during floods or inadequate sanitation conditions.

*Key Facts:*

*Affected States:* Approximately 30 states in Nigeria are currently affected including States surrounding Enugu State.

*Confirmed Cases:* Enugu State has not reported any confirmed cases yet.

*Preventive Measures:* We must remain vigilant and take the following precautions:

• Boil or treat drinking water to ensure its safety.

• Wash hands frequently with soap and clean running water.

• Avoid consuming raw or undercooked food.

• Cook food thoroughly.

• Avoid street food or food from unhygienic sources.

• Wash fruits and vegetables properly.

• Educate your family, friends, and neighbors about cholera prevention.

• Report any symptoms promptly (diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration) to health authorities nearest to you.

• If you experience symptoms (severe diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration), seek medical attention immediately.

Cholera can be treated effectively if detected early.

Remember, prevention is our best defense against cholera. Let’s work together to keep our community safe.

Enugu State Ministry of Health has pre-positioned drugs and consumables to contain the outbreak in case it comes to Enugu State.
