Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has charged Nigerian youths to shun all forms of illicit drug abuse and trafficking.
Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi gave the advice at the end of a week-long activity commemorating the 2017 international day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking organised by NDLEA at UNEC Enugu with the theme: Listening To Children is the First Step To Help Them Grow Healthy And Safe.
Governor Ugwuanyi represented by his Deputy, Cecilia Ezeilo noted that drug trafficking constitutes a major threat to life, security as well as health and advocated stringent measures that would help address the ugly trend.
The governor, who described the theme of this year’s event as apt also enjoined parents to always give a listening ear to children and youth and ensure a safer society.
Earlier in his address of welcome, the executive chairman NDLEA, Retired Col Muhammud Abdallah represented by the state commandant of the agency, Dr. Anthony Ohanyere called for deliberate and sustainable effort at educating the younger generation on prevention of drug abuse.
He commended governor Ugwuanyi for his support to the agency in the fight against drug abuse in the state adding that the agency has seized about 356 kilogram of assorted illicit drugs while 26 persons have been arrested and urged all to join in the vanguard of the fight against illicit drugs in the state.
Delivering a public lecture on the theme of this year’s celebration senior registrar department of psychological medicine UNTH, Ituku Ozalla, Dr. Ujunwa Nduanya while highlighting dangers and effect of drug abuse on youths enumerated some factors that could cause the habit to include peer pressure, anxiety and curiosity.
Some of the students Chioma Charles and John Ene who spoke in separate interviews commended the agency for the awareness and pledged to be the agent of the change while one of the awardees, traditional ruler Of Iyiora Anan, Anambra State, Igwe Achonam Okonkwo also expressed happiness at the event.
The event also featured conferment of award on some notable personalities for their contribution towards the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking as well as presentations from different schools.
