The Enugu State Justice Reform Team (ESJRT) has commended the administration of Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah and his unwavering commitment to justice sector delivery. This happened when a delegation of the team led by Iyom A.J. Offiah, SAN, visited the Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Kingsley Udeh at the Ministry of Justice headquarters, to discuss proposed amendments to key state laws. These amendments encompass the Criminal Code Law, the Magistrates’ Courts’ Law, and the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of the State.
Speaking during the visit, Mrs. A. J. Offiah, emphasized on the importance of collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, to ensure the effective implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice in the state. She also highlighted the need to coordinate efforts with other agencies working on similar initiatives, such as the review of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Law, to achieve synergy and avoid duplication of efforts. She observed such necessary collaborations as a hallmark of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah’s led administration.
Offiah further stressed on the importance of Alternative Dispute Resolution Mechanism (ADR), in resolving various cases, particularly those involving land and Chieftaincy Matters. She noted that implementing ADR would expedite the resolution process and optimize the use of the Enugu State Multi-Door Court House.
While commending the pro-activeness of the Governor in embracing ADR mechanisms, she expressed her belief in the administration’s commitment to increase justice sector delivery using ADR.
Responding to the team, the Hon. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice acknowledged their efforts and progress in amending the Magistrates Court Law as well as the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.
He assured that the redrafting processes are underway, and the amended laws will soon be passed. Additionally, Dr. Udeh informed them of the Governor’s plan to promote awareness of laws among residents, through massive public legal education and sensitization initiatives in Enugu state.
Through these collaborative efforts and proposed amendments, the ESJRT and the Ministry of Justice aim to strengthen the justice system in Enugu State, aligning with Dr. Peter Mbah’s overarching goal of promoting access to justice, development and progress in the justice sector of the state.
