Participants in the Senior Executive course thirty-nine of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, have identified the potentials of Enugu state as an alternative base for returning Nigeria to agriculture as the mainstay of its economy.They made the observation during a courtesy visit to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi at the Enugu government house.
The study group one led by the acting director-general of the institute, Jonathan Mella-Juma, was in Enugu on a study tour to carry out research on the feasibility of agricultural and agro-allied productions in the state.
presenting the group`s address, Juma acknowledged the enormity of natural resources of great potentials for agro-productions in the state as an effective comparative advantage for moving the nation`s economy out of the current recession and expressed hope that the study would offer opportunity for taking useful steps into it.
The group used the occasion to extend their congratulations to the governor on his award as the most labour-friendly governor earned in merits of his people-oriented policies extended to all sections of the state.
Responding, governor Ugwuanyi noted that the study was in line with the state government`s initiatives and programmes aimed at creating greater awareness in tapping the vast potentials available in the state.
The governor further emphasised the imperatives of agriculture, using science and technology for development and economic growth, especially, as the need for new sources of wealth had continued to rise to counter the overdependence on the dwindling oil revenue.
the team`s study focus is embedded in the theme of the course: Science, Technology and Innovation for Development of Agriculture and Agro-allied Industries in Nigeria.
