The Federal Road Safety Corps will begin a nationwide clampdown on tricycles and motorcycles operators without number plates and riders license.
The Corps Commander, Enugu Sector Command, Ogbonnaya Kalu disclosed this in Enugu while addressing tricycle and motorcycle operators on the new policy drive of the Corps ahead of the enforcement exercise billed to commence August 1, this year.
While expressing concern over the alarming rate of crimes being perpetuated by use of unregistered tricycles and motorcycles across the country, the Corp Marshal stated that a database will be developed to easily trace any tricycles used to commit criminal offence.
The issues of the crimes perpetuated through the use of unregistered motorcycle/tricycle in this country are no longer new to us and we all know that it is on the increase. Therefore, there is a compelling need for all hands to be on deck to arrest the situation before it gets out of control”.
“Criminals utilize this means of transport to commit their nefarious acts because it enables them to escape easily and they are also not registered and their riders not licensed to enable law enforcement to trace them for possible to bring them to justice”.
“The matter is a state emergency so much that the federal government and individuals are concern and worried. The FRSC has a database, same database used for vehicle plate numbers are registered, but there is going to be another portal to deal with tricycles and motorcycles”
Kalu said the Corp will establish a mobile court to prosecute persons who fail to comply with the directive.
“The rider who fails to comply will be arrested and his tricycle will be impounded until he change to the newly approved number plates.”
“A mobile court will be in session to ensure instant prosecution of offenders.”
In their separate remarks, Heads and Representatives of other agencies including the Commander, Enugu State Traffic management Authority, Mathew Amor, Ambush Commander, Department of Operations, Police Headquarters, Enugu as well as Assistant Commandant, NSCDC, Enugu Command, Makir TP and the Director, Vehicle Inspection Office, Ministry of Transport, Osita Ugwuangbo hailed the initiative and assured they will collaborate with the FRSC to ensure total compliance with the new policy stressing that it will help in checkmating crime and criminally in the country.
Speaking on behalf of Tricycle operators in the state, the Secretary, Association of Tricycle Union, Enugu State Chapter, Puis Ezugwu noted that while the union was not against the implementation of the news number plates, the timing was not comfortable for members and appealed to the FRSC authority for extension. `
He also stressed the need for harmonization of licenses and permits issued to Tricycle operators to avoid duplication.
