Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, on Thursday, pledged maximum cooperation with armed forces as they carry out their internal security duties within the state.
Ugwuanyi, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs Cecilia Ezeilo, said this during an interactive session between the service chiefs and prominent leaders in the state at the Government House, Enugu.
The service chiefs present included: Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor; Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao and Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Zubairu Gambo.
The governor applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for painstakingly appointing the service chiefs; while commending the service chiefs for their recent appointments.
Ugwuanyi said: “As a government, we thank the military (armed forces) for internal security services in the state and helping the state remain safe and secured.
“We will continue to pledge and give our maximum cooperation to the military over security matter.
“I thank the military formations in the state and call on the presidency to give the military all necessary support and encouragement to continue to succeed’’.
Speaking, Igwe R.S.N. Eze, First Deputy Chairman of Enugu State Council of Traditional Rulers, said that the royal fathers would give the armed forces needed support to succeed.
“We are assuring you of total and continuous cooperation as we had been doing,’’ Eze, who spoke on behalf of the traditional rulers, said.
Mr Solomon Onah, Chairman of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), said that as chief security officers of the council areas, council chairmen would continue to support internal security duties of the military.
The Chairman of Ohanaeze Igbo in Enugu State, Prof Fredrick Eze, said that Enugu State had remained the most peaceful state due to the help of the military.
“We have a governor that takes security issues seriously as well as holds the master key of assembling the best security advisers and funding security,’’ Eze said.
Earlier, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, said that President Muhammadu Buhari had charged the security chiefs to restore peace and security throughout the country.
Irabor, who led other service chiefs, said that the interaction with leaders of the state we avail them information on security situation in the state and by extension the South-East.
“Security is everyone’s responsibility; and our efforts will be in vain, if we do not engage you people and partner with you to ensure lasting security,’’ he said.
