Governor Aminu Masari’ s Special Adviser on Security, Mallam Ahmad Katsina, on Thursday confirmed that the telecommunication shutdown in some Local Government Areas in the state had been lifted.
“It’s true please,” Katsina curtly replied to enquiry on the development.
Recall that telecommunication services were shut down last September in Sabuwa, Faskari, Dandume, Batsari, Danmusa, Kankara, Jibia, Safana, Dutsin-Ma, Funtua, Bakori, Malumfashi and Kurfi LGAs as part of measures to tackle security challenges in the state.
The State Government had also announced other security measures including the closing of Kankara-Sheme as well as Jibia-Gurbin-Baure roads to motorists; suspension of sales of animals at markets in fourteen councils and restriction of sales of fuel that is not more than N5,000 to each motorist in two stations in fourteen councils.
The government also restricted the operation of commercial motorcyclists and tricyclists from 10 pm to 6 am in the state capital, Katsina and from 6 pm to 6 am in all the councils affected by the telecommunication shut down.
Other measures announced by Government were a ban on the sale of second-hand motorcycles at Charanchi market and on interstate transportation of cattle as well as a ban on lorries/trucks from carrying firewood from the bush.
The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Muhammed Inuwa said in a recent press briefing that the security measures had led to a reduction in criminal activities in the state especially banditry and kidnapping, although residents alleged that the telecommunication shutdown prevented victims of banditry attacks from seeking urgent assistance from security operatives when being attacked.
