Kinsmen of a slain Anglican priest, Emeka Merenu, have called on the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, to fish out the killers of the cleric.
Our correspondent, who visited Merenu’s country home at Amaorji in the Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State on Wednesday morning, met a weeping crowd.
While the victim’s colleagues arrived in numbers, one of the priests who does not want to be mentioned told The PUNCH, “We are coming back from his parish at IhitteUkwa in Orsu LGA where he was killed yesterday (Tuesday).”
The cleric told our correspondent that they had deposited the remains of his colleagues at an undisclosed morgue.
He added, “We are just coming back from his parish at IhitteUkwa in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State. We managed to recover his corpse and we have deposited him in a mortuary.”
Another source told Punch correspondent that the young wife of the killed cleric had been taken to the Orlu diocese headquarters.
The village chairman of Amaorji village, Ekezie Opara, told our correspondent that the village was saddened by the development.
The embittered elder said, “We are pained by this development. We never expected it. The priest was just 47 years. This is a young man we were hoping will rise to become a bishop one day. He had three children. We urge the Inspector-General of Police to nab the killers of our son.”
Merenu, the priest in-charge of St Andrew’s Anglican church, IhitteUkwa in Orsu LGA, was killed on Tuesday by fleeing gunmen who burnt down his vehicle.
