A human rights advocacy group, Avocats Sans Frontieres France, otherwise known as, Lawyers Without Borders, has said that it has handled 150 cases of torture in Enugu State.
The ProCAT Case Law Manager, Edugie Amihere, disclosed this during an advocacy visit to the Enugu State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kingsley Udeh.
According to the group, the cases were sponsored by the United Nations (UN) Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture.
Amihere noted that the project started in Nigeria in 2009, stressing that the focal project was against torture and inhuman treatment.
While hinting that the project started in Enugu in 2014, she however added that project was also going on in Lagos, Imo, Kaduna and Ogun states.
The ProCAT Case Law Manager said in the course of the project, it had organised online training for lawyers, security agents, and journalists on acts that constitute human rights violation and how to report as well as protect the victims.
She enumerated their challenges such as timely issuance of nolle, lack of medical officers, lawyers should be divided, those that will write legal opinions and those to go to courts.
Responding, Udeh assured them of his continued support and collaboration.
The Attorney-General asked them to tabulate their action plan and what they would do to ensure speedy service delivery in the state.
