Residents of Mkponkiti axis, Independence Layout were thrown into shock and disbelief when the news broke out that a middle-aged man, identified as Justice Oluka allegedly fell into a well at an uncompleted building located at Pocket Estate and died.
The residential apartment which is still under construction is said to belong to a former Speaker of Enugu state House of Assembly, Abel Chukwu.
The scene of the incident was a Mecca of some sort as residents and passers-by trooped in en-masse to have a glimpse at the gory sight while some Hausa boys battled to pull out the body of the deceased from the well ringed with a disused tyre.
The deceased who left behind a wife and two children was said to have left his workplace at a Pentecostal church at Mkponkiti where he is said to serve as a night watchman, on the excuse that someone had called him around ten pm last night and never returned to his duty post.
Wife of the late Justice Oluka, Mrs Ngozi Oluka who is now left behind with two kids boy and a girl of 3 years and 5 years of age, explained amidst tears how she found her husband, who did not return home last night, early Thursday morning inside a well, already dead.
Yunusa Usman, one of the persons engaged to bring out the lifeless body of the deceased gave account of how they were called upon to help bring out the body of Justice Oluka from the well.
According to him, Justice Oluka was found with his head up.
The police later arrived the scene to ascertain the true situation on ground ,even as effort to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu command, Ebere Amaraizu proved abortive as he did pick calls or return messages sent to his mobile number.
