NAFDAC declares zero-tolerance for fake, adulterated products

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has declared zero tolerance for faking ans adulteration of NAFDAC registered products.

South East Zonal Director, NAFDAC, Martins Iluyomade who made the declaration in Enugu on Wednesday in Enugu said the enforcement team of the agency, including other security agencies are currently raiding markets in the state where the agency has ceased fake and adulterated alcoholic beverages.

He disclosed that over one hundred shops selling fake and adulterated wines, spirits at OGBETE Main market have been sealed and their products confiscated.

According to him the suspects will he made to face the full wrath of the law.

“What we are doing is ridding the sellers of fake and adulterated wines in the market. It is very necessary because NAFDAC is out to safeguard the life and the health of all Nigerians, and so consuming anything that is adulterated and fake has a serious effect on our health. And, we have a lot of health issues now that are traced to consumption of fake and adulterated drinks. So, it is in a bid to do our constitutional role that NAFDAC  has been given,  we are out here to mop up as much as we can the fake, adulterated drinks out of the markets.”

While acknowledging that adulteration is endemic, he said “we are trying to curb it, NAFDAC is going all out now to stop that menace because there is no hiding place. I can tell everybody especially in the southeast and all over Nigeria, because NAFDAC is out to make sure that we remove fake and adulterated products out of the market, so that we can safeguard the health of Nigeria.

“ NAFDAC has a procedure. We are scientific organization where we have the way we carry out our things. Yes, we have seen these are adulterated and fake we are going to also test them in the lab. And after testing them, we will take the next step of prosecuting the people that are involved in this dastardly’.

“So far, we are about talking about the range of hundreds and we are still looking for more. It is a continuous exercise, I can tell you. For everybody who is dealing with NAFDA products, this is the time for everybody to sit up. Make sure that what you sell is genuine. There is zero tolerance right now for adulteration and faking of NAFDAC products, Iluyomade said.
