The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged politicians and political parties to desist forthwith from involving the association in political issues and political developments in the country.
The National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NANS, Comrade Bestman Okereafor, made this clarification in a statement he issued in Enugu on Friday.
Okereafor said that the attention of the association had been drawn to a letter dated Aug. 27, which was addressed to the Chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC) Anambra State Gubernatorial Appeal Committee.
He said that the said letter allegedly accused NANS members of influencing the party primaries held at the Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, Anambra and allegedly labeling the association members as thugs.
“To set the records straight for the purpose of clarity, NANS is a responsibly responsive association and our members were not present at the party primaries that took place in the state.
“This is basically because NANS is not partisan and her members are not expected to be partisan as we do not interfere in political party affairs.
“Furthermore, the national leadership of NANS will not tolerate such act even at a time when Nigerian Students are saddened over the deplorable state of our campuses and education system in the country,’’ he said.
According to him, conclusively NANS is calling on the leadership of the APC and the politician responsible to withdraw the image tarnishing letter in the next 72 hours.
“Or else, the politician responsible will face the full wrath of Nigerian Students as NANS will not hesitate to sue him to court,’’ he said.
