…prosecutes 20 Suspects, rehabilitate 45 clients
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Enugu State Command says it arrested 46 suspects for drug abuse and illicit trafficking in the first half of the year, 2021.
The suspects include 38 males and 8 females according to the State Commander of the NDLEA in Enugu, Mr. Anietie Bassey Idim while briefing journalists ahead of the 2021 International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Idim disclosed that 712.578 kg of Cannabis Sativa, 132.39 grammes of Cocaine, 34.90 grammes of Methamphetamine and 81.810 kilogrammes of Psychtropic substance were seized.
He said out 46 suspects arrested, the command successfully prosecuted 20 suspects include 16 males, and 4 females and secured 7 convictions.
While citing the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, World Drug Report, Mr. Idim disclosed that about 14 point 3 million Nigerians, between the ages of 15 and 64 years had used drugs.
According to the NDLEA state commander, the global observance which holds June 26 every year, is aimed at raising awareness on the major problems associated with illicit drugs in society.
Mr Idim called on relevant stakeholders to join the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking to save the youths from its dangerous consequences.
“The global drug situation is worrisome and Nigeria, or indeed Enugu state cannot be separated, both in prevalence and the attendant consequences. Our youths are getting increasingly involved in drug abuse and trafficking, which to a large extent has threatened their future growth rate and development. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime World Drug Report 2018 revealed that about 14.3 million Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 64 years had use drugs.
“This figure is indeed hair- raising and calls for concerted efforts against the menace. In realisation of this enormous task, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Enugu State Command is hereby appealing to all stakeholders within the state, to join hands in tackling this Hydra-head scourge. It is equally in consideration of this enormity that the UN had carefully chosen this year’s theme to be ” Share Fact on Drugs, Save Lives”, implying that all should as much as possible, endeavour to spread the facts concerning the consequences of this dreaded monster to enable us nip it in the bud.
