A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Divine Era Development and Social Rights Initiatives (DEDSRI) has organised a meeting for the dissemination of findings of project tracking groups in some local government areas of Enugu State.
The meeting which held in four local government areas of the state is under the Strengthening Citizens Resistance Against Prevalence of Corruption (SCRAP-C) project.
The local government areas are Nkanu West, Udi, Igboeze North and Igboeze South.
The project is implemented in the state by DEDSRI in partnership with Actionaide Nigeria under the Upright4Nigeria Campaign.
The Executive Director of DEDSRI, Ms Ogechukwu Enwelum, said that the campaign is designed to improve service delivery by ensuring that communities demand for accountability and transparency in the usage of public funds.
Enwelum said that members of the community committee on project tracking represented Community-Based Leaders and Organisations.
“In implementing this project, our team mobilised no fewer than 2, 943 community members in the state in consultation with community leaders of 14 local government areas.
“We had sensitisation programmes on the cost of corruption, social accountability and constituency projects monitoring in the 14 councils so far covered,” she said.
She said that the committee members were engaged in a three-day training on the use of social accountability tools for effective community engagement.
“After the training, the committee members went to the field to track the status of Federal Government intervention projects in their areas,”Enwelum said.
Meanwhile, in Igboeze North Local Government Area, the Chairman, Project Tracking Committee, Mr Christopher Eze, said that the area was replete of abandoned projects.
Eze said that a motorised water borehole in Aguibeji Autonomous Community was abandoned but a completion certificate for the project handed over to Iyonu community.
He mentioned other abandoned projects in the area to include a motorised borehole in Isiugwu community and Aguibeje Community Health Centre.
In Udi Local Government Area, there were also reported cases of abandoned projects in the area while many projects are non-existent.
Some of the abandoned projects include the Nsude Community Town Hall and borehole project attracted by Mr Denis Amadi, a former member of the House of Representatives.
Others are erosion control projects at Obinagu/Umuabi Road.
