NGOs step up campaign against elder abuse in Enugu

In continuation of its avowed commitment to the Voice Project on ‘Curtailing Elder Abuse in 11 Communities in Enugu State’, the Center for Gender Economics (CGE Africa) in collaboration with Dew-Drop Foundation (DDF) has commenced a 3-week data collection exercise in 11 communities in the State.

The Programme Officer , Centre for Gender Economics (CGE Africa) Florence Ifeanyi-Aneke said the communities include; Akpuoga, Amaechi Idodo Umuode, Ogonoeji- Akpugo, Ogbeke, Orjiagu- Agbani, Akwuke Uwani,  Akwuke Awkunanaw, Ndiagu Owo, Isigwe Ugbawka  and Isienu Nkerefi.

According to Ifeanyi-Aneke, data collectors and community mobilizers have been trained for the exercise and would spend 3 days in each community.

She said “ On the first day, they will carry out a survey by administering questionnaires to elderly persons in order to establish elderly persons current situation as it relates to the different forms of abuse they experience”.

“Second day, data collectors will conduct focal group discussions with community stakeholders : community leaders, Religious Groups(Churches), Age groups Seniors (60 Years and Above), Age Groups Youths (Above 18 Years), Age Groups Adolescents (11 – 18 years) , Social groups Educationist (Teachers) and Community Health/Social workers –  to examine their perspective and attitudes to ageing and abuse”.

“Third day, data collectors will carry out Key Informant interviews with leaders of already identified community groups to further probe at individual levels the opinions of community leaders on elder abuse within the community.

The focus group discussion which is one of the sensitisation activities took place at Akpoga Nike, Enugu East local government area of the State.

According to her, after the weeks exercise, data collection exercise, data will be collated and analyzed; adding that three reports will be produced and published from the research findings for further use in the project.

She listed the reports focus to include;  Community Assessment of Elder Abuse – a baseline line report,     Seenagers Association Toolkit- which will serve as a facilitation guide for the Seenagers clubs that will be become operational in 10 more additional communities – adding to Umuode where it has been piloted in the past and Community Stakeholders Inclusion Guide- which will serve as a guide to community stakeholders on how to stop abuse of the elderly persons and include them in key communal activities Living the saying that “Sometimes It Takes A ‘Village’ To Help Seniors Stay In Their Homes.”

The exercise which commenced on 30th September  is expected to end on 22nd October, 2019.
