Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, has embarked on a sensitization walk to mark the beginning of the 2019 physicians’ week.
The week long activities of the association which kicked off with walk for life aimed at sensitizing the public and campaign against the rising cases of suicide in the society will end with thanksgiving church service on Sunday 20th October 2019.
The walk for life train took off from Enugu state university teaching hospital, Parklane moved through all saint church Abakaliki road down to Okpara avenue to Holy Ghost Cathedral Ogui , down to Ogui road, Artisan Market and back to Abakaliki road through Ebeano tunnel and terminated at ESUT Hospital Parklane where the train started its journey.

Addressing the members of the NMA, the chairman Enugu state chapter of the association Dr. Ike Okwesili said the event is an annual ritual that reminds them of their responsibilities as doctors and how to give back to society.
Okwesili who described the theme of the weeklong activities which is ’’Fear Of Unknown Person, A Review’’ as apt, said every individual has right to life and therefore needs to be treated irrespective of their status once brought to hospital.
Dr. Okwesili frowned at the increasing rate of suicide in the society, noting that the association chose as one of the sub theme of the day “the roles of doctors in preventing the increasing rate of suicide”.
Also the chairman of the planning committee, Dr James Akpeh said the association will use the weeklong activities to reach out to vulnerable in society especially the youths.
A radiologist, Dr. Ngozi Dim said the physicians’ week gives the members of the association opportunity to socialise and exercise as well as connect with public.
Different inscriptions displayed on the placards to enlighten people were “suicide is no solution, keep fighting, no to suicide, be open and talk to someone because suicide is no option; suicide doesn’t end the pain, it just passes it to someone else among others.
