A viral video of Nigeria’s Tokyo 2020 medal hopeful, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, washing a jersey for his next outing has elicited outrage on social media.
The athlete claimed he was given only one jersey for the tournament.
He wrote: “When you made the Olympic finals but you only have one jersey.”
The Nation reports Enekwechi qualified for the men’s Shot Put final after he launched his implement to a mark of 21.16m to place fourth and pick up one of the non-automatic qualifying spots to make a big push for a podium finish.
He will compete in the final on Wednesday.
Many Nigerians expressed displeasure over the trending video, describing it as an embarrassment.
Moses Ewa said: “This is disgraceful and unacceptable, the Federation in charge must be held accountable for their disgraceful outing and fraudulent management style.
“This Olympic is the worst in Nigeria history, all our so called “leaders” think about is position of authority without the capacity to handle the task involved. What a shame!! #Endbadleadership!!”
Ofonime Sam stated: “In saner climes, the entire managers of sport ministry would have tendered their resignation or forced to do so for this grave international embarrassment. considering the fact that monies was paid to our sport ministry by the kits company. Shame!”
Debayo Kola wrote: “The presidency must sack some officials of the sports ministry once the Olympic contingent returns. Nigeria in the annals of Olympics history hadn’t suffered the height of intimidation and embarrassment as in the ongoing 2020 Olympics. Heads must roll!”
Ochayi Daniel argued: “You wouldn’t have done this video if you were eliminated at early stages. You should have complained earlier”
