The Ogun State Police Command said it has arrested a suspect identified simply as Okereke who allegedly stabbed his friend, Ibere Okorie, to death during an argument over a female lover.

PUNCH Online gathered from a police source on Monday that Okereke and Okorie had left for a business trip from Ijebu-Ode to Niger State when the incident occurred.

According to information obtained by our correspondent, Okereke and Okorie decided to stay at a hotel in Mokwa due to the stress they had endured on the trip.

The police said while the two friends were staying at the hotel, there was a fight that appeared to be about a woman who was thought to be dating the two friends.

Okereke was said to have picked up a piece of a broken bottle during the heated altercation, according to the police, and stuck it in Okerie’s stomach, leaving him with a serious injury.

It was learnt that the suspect fled the scene and raced back to Ijebu-Ode after realising the damage he had caused, while hotel workers rushed the victim to a private hospital in Mokwa.

When the family of the deceased victim received the news, the police source said they took him (the victim) to an undisclosed hospital in Lagos State for further medical care before he was said to have been taken to the Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, where he was later pronounced dead on December 13, 2023.

When contacted, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Odutola Omolola, confirmed that the suspect had already been detained.

“The corpse has been deposited at the morgue. We have interrogated all the parties involved. The suspect is currently in detention, and the investigation is ongoing,” Odutola stated on Monday.
