In the heart of Nigeria’s Enugu State Nigeria, a groundbreaking initiative is taking shape, aiming to revolutionize education through the lens of sustainability. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all, are not just lofty ideals here; they’re woven into the very fabric of education at the Enugu State Smart/ Green Schools.
At the forefront of this movement is a holistic approach that integrates sustainable practices into every aspect of our classroom activities and the curriculum as well. From renewable energy to environmental conservation, students are immersed in hands-on learning experiences that empower them to become active participants in shaping a more sustainable future.
One of the key pillars of the Enugu State Smart/green Schools initiative is environmental stewardship. From the conceptualization of the schools, our governor His Excellency Dr Peter Mbah through the Honorable Commissioner for Education, Professor Ndubueze Mbah, have shown great passion for environmental Stewardship and have ensured it’s implementation in our schools. Our students are taught the importance of preserving natural resources and minimizing their ecological footprint. Through initiatives such as our Eco-play project ( a sustainable environment project), the waste reduction projects, and others SDGs Innovation Challenges, they learn practical skills that they can apply both in their communities and beyond.
But then sustainability isn’t just about protecting the environment; it’s also about promoting social and economic development. That’s why the governor of Enugu State His Excellency Dr Peter MBAH initiated the idea of the Enugu State Smart Schools to place a very strong emphasis on equity and inclusion to ensure access to quality education for all students in Enugu State, regardless of background or circumstance. By this move, His Excellency has laid the foundation for a more just and equitable society.
Technology plays a crucial role in this endeavor, providing tools and resources to support learning and innovation. It is worthy to note that Enugu State is the first state to fully digitalize basic education. From our solar-powered classrooms to digital learning platforms , electronic board and a tablet for each teacher and student, Enugu state students are equipped with the skills they need to thrive in the 21st century while also reducing their carbon footprint.
The impact of the Enugu State Smart Schools extends far beyond the classroom walls. By instilling a sense of responsibility and stewardship in the next generation leaders, we are sowing the seeds for a more sustainable future for Enugu State and the world at large. As other regions grapple with the challenges of climate change and sustainable development, the Enugu State Smart Schools serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration. By prioritizing sustainability in education, we are not only shaping young minds but also shaping a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
