A 19-year-old suspected transformer vandal, identified as Nwode Sunday “m”, of Ngwo Camp 2, Coal Camp, Enugu, has been electrocuted while vandalising a distribution transformer belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) located around Missionary Avenue, Coal Camp, Enugu.
The Head of Corporate Communications, EEDC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, who confirmed the incident in a release issued to newsmen on Friday, said the lifeless body of a yet to be identified vandal suspect was found within the space of the transformer in the early hours of today (Friday)
He described the incident as tragic and very unfortunate.
“From all indications, it is presumed that power supply must have been restored while the deceased was cutting the armoured cables, which resulted in him being electrocuted”, Ezeh said.
Ezeh lamented the increasing rate at which vandals attack electricity installations within EEDC’s network daily. This development he said has not only adversely impacted the quality of service to its customers but also its revenue.
He further said that vandalism has been a big challenge to the company, and there is no way this can be addressed without the support of critical stakeholders.
“It is a battle we all have to fight collectively because once these transformers are vandalised, customers who are served by the installation will be greatly affected,” Ezeh said.
He therefore appealed to customers to join hands with the company to ensure that these facilities within their neighbourhoods are protected.
Also also a statement, the Enugu Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe who also confirmed the incident disclosed that the lifeless body of the suspect has been taken to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead, and the corpse was deposited in the mortuary for preservation and further investigative actions.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, has warned criminals involved in such criminal acts to turn over a new leaf to avoid facing the full weight of the law, or suffering similar unfortunate fate as the suspect at issue.
