WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY: Teachers decry poor remuneration

In commemoration of this year’s World Teachers’ Day, Chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers Enugu State Chapter, Theophilus Odoh says improvement on provision of working tools, incentives, among other needs of the teachers will birth smooth operation in the profession and development of the education sector.

Odoh, who made the assertion on Friday in an interview with newsmen, attributed the lack of interest to the job by young graduates to poor remuneration and ill-treatment of workers in the profession.

Speaking on this year’s observance themed “young teachers: the future of the profession,  Odoh expressed dissatisfaction with the low level of credence paid to teaching profession in Nigeria, adding that school deficit, overpopulation in classes of most government-owned schools, under appreciation and  poor funding has resulted to dereliction of duty.

Also, the Vice Principal of Day Secondary School, Independence Layout Enugu, Chizoba Madubuike, who spoke on behalf of the principal, Nwanwike-Nwodo Maria commended Enugu state government for measures employed so far in upholding quality standard of education and rapid revamping of schools in the state.

Some teachers of the school, Cecilia Onyibo and Thankgod Udeh applauded their colleagues for living up to the expectations of students, parents and society and urged the government to look into issues concerning them with every sense of fairness especially that of new minimum wage and teaching aids.

Some students, Williams Chelsea and Emmanuel Ikenna thanked teachers for recording indelible impacts in education sector.

This year’s observance themed “Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession”, is aimed at proffering ideas to attract and keep young persons to the profession.
