Electricity consumers in Enugu West Senatorial Zone have called on the State House of Assembly not to renege on the state of emergency it earlier declared on the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company.
The zone gave the submission at the public hearing aimed at addressing the EEDC and consumers crisis in the state.
Presenting memoranda, representatives from the five local government areas that make up Enugu West Senatorial Zone explained that the electricity distribution company is not customer friendly and advised on the need for them to create customer care offices in all the 17 local government areas of the state.
The zone representatives demanded standard billing system and also urged the House of Assembly to compel EEDC to enumerate households and stop bulk metering.
Also, representatives from various organisations and agencies also lamented on the irresponsibility and inefficiency of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the metering commission to checkmate the activities of the EEDC.
They also noted that businesses have continued to fold up as a result of lack of power supply which does not represent the agenda of the state government which is striving to make the state an international business hub.
Earlier while declaring open the three-day zonal public hearing on EEDC/Enugu State Electricity Consumer Crisis, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly Edward Ubosi, represented by the Deputy Speaker Donatus Uzogbado noted that the hearing is to address the motion moved by Chinedu Nwamba about two weeks ago on the exploitation of people of the state by overbilling and epileptic power supply.
Uzogbado while urging participants to present submissions assured the hearing is not a witch-hunt but to ensure government meets its core mandate of providing basic amenities for the people.
The public hearing will continue on the 3rd of May with Enugu North and 10th of May for Enugu East.
