Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State has pledged his administration’s commitment to the protection of vulnerable people’s rights, as well as uphold ideals that had led to collaboration between it and the Department for International Development (DFID).
The governor gave the assurance at the handing over of TAMAR SARC, a rights advocacy centre and home for victims of abuse, to the state government by the British high commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Paul Arkwright, in Enugu.
“We must ensure the full realisation of the centre and also assure you of our willingness for future partnership. The Department for International Development has assisted us especially in the key areas of development like Justice for All, state accountability, among others,” the governor said.
Mr. Arkwright commended the many positive steps taken by the Ugwuanyi administration to enthrone economic development in the state. He noted that it was gratifying that people could now resolve social issues amicably, adding that “the United Kingdom will continue to contribute to the development of Nigeria”.
The head of DFID in the South East and South South, Mrs. Olachi Chuks Romnie, thanked the governor for identifying with their programmes over the years and pledged their readiness to complement his administration’s efforts to develop the state.
While the Enugu State Commissioner for Gender Affairs and Social Development, Princess Peace Nnaji, canvassed support for the government’s policies, other speakers including the Executive
Director of Women Aids Collective, Prof. Joy Ezeilo, mostly frowned at violence and emotional abuse against women and girls and called for a concerted effort to stop the malaise.
